Karhausen (1993) asserts that "Scatology was common in Mitteleuropa, central Europe" noting for instance that Mozarts Salzburg colleague Michael Haydn also wrote a scatological canon. Some felt the clamor of the bells dispersed evil spirits that sought to destroy the church with fire; others claimed that the noise of the bells disrupted the lightning strokes. He wrote several other operas, each of which contained some of his best music, but only the three master-works just named have held their place to the present day. Christian Philosophy It will be observed that the formal distinction between philosophical and theological discourse leaves untouched what has often been the mark of one who is at once a believer and a philosopher.
